Dallas Gastric Bypass Surgery

Learn More About Dallas Gastric Bypass Surgery

Dr. Nirmal Jayaseelan—“Dr. Jay” to his clients—is an experienced practitioner of bariatric surgery. For more than ten years, he has helped patients overcome obstacles to long-term weight loss through a variety of advanced procedures, including LAP-BAND®, sleeve gastrectomy, and gastric bypass surgery.

In this article, patients will find information about Dr. Jay’s clinic in Dallas, gastric bypass surgery, and the advantages that this procedure offers to patients. Read on to learn more.

What is Dallas Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Bariatric procedures each have a different strategy for helping patients feel full while restricting their intake of nutrients. Gastric bypass surgery supports weight loss by changing the way that a patient’s stomach and small intestine digest the food that he or she eats.

Dr. Jay performs gastric bypass surgery either laparoscopically or through open surgery. Laparoscopic procedures have a reduced recovery time and are the preferred method, but not every patient is a candidate for the technique.

In the procedure, Dr. Jay divides the patient’s stomach into two sections. The top section can hold about 1 ounce of food, which means that patients feel full on less food. Dr. Jay creates a path from this “pouch” to part of the lower intestine, called the jejunum. As a result, the food that a patient eats will bypass a section of the stomach and the lower intestine, where much of the intake of calories takes place.

What Are the Advantages of Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Long-term, sustained weight loss is a challenge for many people. Gastric bypass surgery allows the majority of patients to shed around 75% of their excess body weight. The sheer numbers involved and the high rate of success make weight loss surgery an attractive option.

In addition to weight loss, patients with hypertension or non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus may no longer require medication after the procedure. Losing large amounts of body mass can also help those who suffer from sleep apnea, joint and back pain, asthma, arthritis and shortness of breath.

Important Information About Gastric Bypass Surgery

Patients who choose the gastric bypass procedure are making a long-term commitment. Because of the nature of the operation, patients will be taking in fewer nutrients than before, which can create serious complications if they stray from the prescribed regiment of vitamins and supplements. Patients will need to take an active role in their health care, diet, and activity. Dr. Jay advises clients throughout an initial consultation at his clinic, Dallas Bariatric Center. He meets often with patients following the operation to make certain that they are on the path to recovery.
