Pam Ward Lost 70lbs with LAP-BAND

I am the youngest of six children. Being raised in the South, we ate a lot of fried foods. My parents and siblings have all struggled with weight problems and almost every disease associated with obesity. My personal battle with obesity began in high school. When my metabolism slowed down, the weight started pouring on. I tried diet pills, endless diets and weight loss programs. I would lose weight for a while and then lose my self-control. Each time, I would gain more than I lost. More I was a smoker for 23 years. When I quit in 1994, I substituted food and started putting on more weight. I continued trying diet after diet but was never successful long term. I soon developed high blood pressure and high cholesterol and began taking medications daily. Then came restless leg syndrome, which I began taking a pill for each day. In 2009, I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes and began checking my blood sugar every day. In 2010, I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and began sleeping each night on a CPAP machine. I then heard about the LAP-BAND procedure and consulted my doctor. He highly recommended it for me and referred me to Dr. Jayaseelan. Since my surgery in April 2010, I have lost 70 pounds and six dress sizes. I have so much more energy and self-esteem. You begin noticing the smallest things, like being able to cross your legs while sitting, not getting winded trying to tie your shoes and being able to wear a belt again. I no longer have sleep apnea and have given up the CPAP machine. I am no longer in the pre-diabetes stage and have given up pricking my finger every day. My blood pressure and cholesterol levels are coming down and I look forward to giving up those medications soon. I want to renew my vows with my husband of 40 years and look forward to the new me walking down the aisle. Collapse

Brandi Wilson Lost Lost 185lbs

I was heavy for as long as I can remember. My father was overweight and his mother before him. I told myself that I was big-boned and that I didn’t really have a chance to be thin. Prior to the gastric sleeve surgery, I weighed 315 lbs. In less than 12 months, I lost 180 lbs. and I have maintained my new weight with no problems. More But I have also gained a great deal – self-esteem, energy, confidence, good health, and the ability to wear clothes off of the rack rather than pay high prices for cute, fat clothes. I can participate in sports and work out at the gym without feeling as if I am going to die. Friends from high school see me on the street and don’t even recognize me.
They are amazed at the transformation! After seeing my success, my father and one of my mother’s co-workers also went to Dr. Jay for the gastric sleeve. They are seeing the pounds melt away as well. Prior to his surgery, my father had been on numerous medications for multiple health problems including diabetes. His surgery was only 3 months ago, but he is already off of his diabetes medications and his doctor is predicting that he will be medication free in 90 days. We are so thankful to Dr. Jay!

Susan Tull Lost 86lbs with LAP-BAND

I had LAP-BAND surgery on May 7, 2009. I am 34 years old. My largest weight was 268 pounds. I am now weighing 182 pounds, thanks to Dr. Jayaseelan and his team. My largest pair of jeans was size 22. I am now wearing size 8 jeans. Before my journey, I never wore a belt. Today, I find myself wearing belts and tucking in my shirts. I found losing weight and loving yourself is the best medicine for the mind.

Mitchell Robinson Lost 221lbs with LAP-BAND

Hey, guys, my name is Mitchell Robinson. I heard about the band for the first time in October of 2003, when my mom actually had the procedure. Being that I weighed 395 pounds, my mom questioned me about having the surgery. I immediately said, “Count me out!” I quietly sat back and observed my mom’s progress. After a fairly quick and effortless weight loss of 50 pounds, I decided that this might actually work for me, too. In March of 2004, I had my LAP-BAND procedure. MoreI lost 28 pounds during the first six weeks after surgery, and a whopping 50 pounds in less than six months. It was amazing! That was a great start, but I knew I still had a ways to go. Shortly after having the procedure, I moved to Colorado and started attending culinary school. Needless to say, I didn’t get to follow up as often as I should, but luckily I have still had great success with my band. I lost 221 pounds total. Without the band I wouldn’t be who I am today. Thanks a bunch, Dr. Jay! Collapse

Heath Profit Lost 93lbs

I wanted to become more active for my health and for my two boys. I chose the Sleeve because I didn’t want the restrictions on the type of food I can eat. I enjoy cooking on the grill and still wanted to be able to eat all the meats! I have been able to get out and play with my kids and have began running for both exercise and enjoyment. I wanted to be able to run an entire mile without walking. Today I am able to run over three miles and not have to walk until I have reached my goal. I ran my first 5k in 29:59!

Spring Benavides Lost 140lbs with LAP-BAND

Dr. Jay saved my life when he banded me on April 8, 2005. I had been on just about every diet known to mankind. I would lose 30 pounds and as soon as I hit a plateau, I would sabotage myself and gain it all back…and then some. At my highest weight, I was around 275 pounds. Today, I manage to keep my weight between 135-140 pounds. I went from a size 22-24 to a size 4, and it feels great! My life has totally changed for the better. Before, I dreaded going out in public with my friends and family. I would see my reflection in storefront windows and notice that I was twice the size of my husband. MoreWalking through the parking lot, I would see that my shadow made him disappear, which made me want to disappear. Now, we can walk side by side, entering the same door at the same time. That may sound strange, but it is the small things that you begin to notice that make all the difference in the world. One of my most memorable “wow” moments was when my best friend (banded the same day as me) and I went back to the same photo booth that we had gone to before our surgery. The first time we went, the two of us could not fit on the bench together. She had to sit on my lap for us to be in the photo together. When we returned just a few months after being banded, to our amazement, we were both able to sit side by side. We screamed and cried and could not believe what had happened. Everyone heard us and I’m sure they thought we were crazy, but it was one of the best moments of my life. The banded life may not be for everyone, but it certainly was the right decision for me. With the love and support from my family and the wonderful care and encouragement from Dr. Jay and his staff, I am living life again and enjoying every minute of it. I am no longer a prisoner in my house, and on a sunny day, you might just see my husband and me riding on his Harley…if you do, please wave! Collapse

SUSAN BROCK Lost 128lbs with LAP-BAND

I have always had a problem with my weight. When I was a sophomore in high school, I was in a size 16/18. When I was 19, I decided that I didn’t want to be heavy anymore and resorted to prescription diet pills. They worked and I was down to a size 12 and happy with the way I looked. I got married, had three children and proceeded to pack the weight on again. Before I knew it, I was an unhappy woman in a size 26! And to top it all off, my husband was not happy with the way I looked and decided that he would rather be with someone else. MoreAfter over 22 years of marriage, I was now an unhappy, DIVORCED woman in a size 26! Something had to be done! I was looking into having a gastric bypass when a friend of mine told me about the LAP-BAND. He had attended a seminar at the Surgery Center of Richardson hosted by Dr. Jay and was very excited about the procedure. I attended the very next seminar and was hooked! I signed up that very day and had the surgery in January of 2004! That is when my life began to change for the better. It took me one year and three months to go from a size 26 to a size 8/10! Not only did I lose my “evil twin” as I put it (128 pounds), but I gained self-esteem and self-worth. I was finally the person I wanted to be. I started dating during my LAP-BAND experience but did not meet “Mr. Right” until I was at my goal weight. We have been together ever since (five years). Then, the unthinkable happened. I started gaining some weight back. I believe that I got comfortable with having the LAP-BAND and realized that I can eat some things I shouldn’t eat. Luckily, it has only been a small amount and I am back on track to losing it again. It is very important that you don’t revert back to your old habits. It is not a miracle fix and there are some sacrifices you must make, but they are all worth it! Collapse

Caryn James Lost 50lb with Sleeve Gastrectomy

I have been struggling with my weight for over ten years. I have tried everything from starvation to Weight Watchers, even expensive plans such as Metabolic Research Center. Although I would be successful at losing, I failed at keeping the weight off. I was insatiable, often consuming from 3000 to 4000 calories a day. I ate when I was happy or sad. More It seems every family event centered around food. Food was familiar and comforting to me, and I never turned away from it.
The extra 50 to 60 pounds that I have been carrying literally ruined my health to the point that I often laid down at night wondering if I would wake up in the morning. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and high cholesterol. My smoking habit and obesity also lead to COPD. Although I no longer smoke (quit June 2009), this condition is not curable. Currently, I weigh 162 lbs. I am ecstatic, to say the least. I do not have to take ANY medication. I now have enough energy to exercise. I have even decided to date again.
Having the gastric sleeve procedure has been the best decision that I have ever made. I have never been in control of my appetite. It’s unbelievable!!! I thought that social situations would be difficult. Nope. Piece of cake!!! I am extremely happy with the new me.

Yolanda Lopez Lost 111lb with Sleeve Gastrectomy

Gastric Sleeve before and after
So even after my LapBand in April 2005 I couldn’t manage to control my weight.  I did very well my first 4 months when I lost 60 pounds and was finally able to get pregnant with our third son after trying for 2 years. I was able to take advantage of the flexibility of the band and sustain a healthy pregnancy and then change gears to loose the weight after I was done nursing. More That enabled me to get pregnant with our forth son the following year.  After the two pregnancies my band was just not the same.  I went from fill to unfill to fill to unfill.  That lasted about 2 years and slowly but surely my weight hit the 300 pound mark and I could not afford to let time continue to pass without change.  I had heard about the Sleeve through a friend of a friend, done some research of my own and drug my husband in for a consult with Dr Jay.  I knew the fears he was having about such a permanent procedure would be addressed fully , and they were. On the day of my revision 12/27/2011, I was down to 286 due to my liquid diet (I started early just in case surgery was available quickly).  To date I am at 162 pounds!!  My initial goal was to get to 143 to say I lost half of myself and I am still working toward that but with more of a focus on toning and shaping my new body vs. achieving a number.  The first picture with my husband was a trip to SeaWorld April 2011; I was right at 300lbs.  The second picture was April 2013; 1 year and 4 months after my sleeve procedure I was about 175. Jason Jordan Lost 192lbs with Sleeve Gastrectomy

I was raised on a typical American family farm where we worked hard and ate well. While I was never “thin” I stayed in pretty good shape due to the long hours of hard work associated with farming. It wasn’t until I left the family farm and went to college that my weight started to spiral out of control. 15 years, and 100+ “diets” later, I was weighing 405lbs with high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol and high triglycerides- it was time for drastic measures. More With much encouragement from my wonderful wife of 15 years, Brandy, I decided bariatric surgery was in my future. After extensive research of many bariatric surgeons, I scheduled a consultation with Dr. Jayaseelan at Dallas Bariatric Center. After my initial consultation with Dr. Jay I decided to have a LAP-BAND procedure done on February 4th, 2010. While I lost about 40 lbs in the next 4 months, my body reacted very poorly to the LAP-BAND, and I struggled with constant pain and discomfort. In July 2010, I had all of the fluid removed from the band to help ease my discomfort but unfortunately soon gained back the 40 lbs I had lost. Dr. Jay and his staff worked with me for the next 18 months to try and resolve my issues until Dr. Jay finally convinced me to do a revision to a Sleeve Gastrectomy. So on August 15th, 2012 I had the revision done. Now, 9 months and 192lbs later, I am convinced this was the best decision ever made! My high blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol, and triglycerides are all now at normal levels. Most importantly, I finally feel comfortable in my own body for the first time that I can remember. Maybe the greatest thing is finally fitting in an airplane seat!! I work as a consultant in the meat industry and as such fly 100,000+ miles a year to destinations all over the world, and it is a wonderful feeling to not have to be self-conscious about taking up my seat and part of my neighbor’s!!!
I am often asked “What is the key to your success?”. This is what I tell everyone: Without a doubt the Sleeve Gastrectomy was certainly the tool that started me down the path to success, but it is not a “magic pill”- weight loss is hard work! Eating right (Protein! Protein! Protein!), and daily exercise have been as critical as the gastric procedure to my weight loss success.
I give my most heartfelt thanks to Dr. Jay and his staff, and to my wife, for all of their time, support and dedication- I couldn’t have done it without any of you!!

Christina Davila Lost 178lbs with Lap Band

Hi my name is Christina! I weighed 115 pounds on my wedding day, 29 years ago. The struggle with my weight began shortly after. For me it was a gradual progression, where year after year I just became heavier and heavier. I’ve been on every diet plan and have tried almost every diet pill. Any success from that was short-lived.
More Through it all I have always been a happy person, married to a wonderful man who has always loved me for the person on the inside. Together we have raised one son and have countless long lasting relationships with family and friends. Looking back my battle with weight was always at the forefront and easy to put aside. For the most part I felt great and life was good. In factsome friends say they never truly “saw” how heavy I had become that even my attitude in life didn’t allow concerning thoughts to hang around for long. Sure, at a glance it was obvious to me and everyone else that I was heavy; but I was happy and that was that.
A few years before my surgery I was diagnosed with type II diabetes and began experiencing problems with my heart. To make things worse I couldn’t even sleep in my own bed. I had to sleep on a recliner in order to adequately breathe air into my body at night. At 40 years old my weight had surpassed 350 pounds. I knew I was beyond the point of diet plans and diet pills. I began to research serious options.
In July 2007 I met Dr. Nirmal Jayaseelan and he set me on a path to get my health back in tune by having Lap Band Surgery. As of today I’m 178 pounds lighter. The lap band surgery has saved me, alleviating much of the medical conditions that once plagued me and adding years to my life. The road has been tough, but I’ve learned so much along the way. I am truly blessed by the knowledge and support of Dr. Jay and his team.
