dr jayNIRMAL JAYASEELAN

Dr. Jay grew up in Lubbock, Texas and received his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Texas Tech University. After a short career as a systems engineer, he went to medical school at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, where he obtained Honors in Surgical Research for a study on shock under Dr. Tom Shires.

Dr. Jay completed his General Surgery Residency at Oregon Health Sciences University. He was trained by Dr. Don Trunkey (world-famous trauma surgeon), Dr. Lee Swanstrom (President of SAGES, a laparoscopic society), and Dr. John Porter (editor of the Yearbook of Vascular Surgery).

One of the most experienced Bariatric surgeons in the nation, Dr. Nirmal Jayaseelan has performed more than 8,000 weight loss operations. His practice has every resource to care for the most complex bariatric patient. Dr. Jay readily accepts complex bariatric consults from all over the world, including Mexico, Nigeria, and Barbados. He is long established in bariatrics and has been voted best bariatric surgeon in Dallas every year since the inception of the category in D Magazine.

Dr. Jay is also considered a expert in Gastric Balloon surgery. A non-invasive bariatric procedure developed to “bridge the gap” between pure diet and exercise, and having weight-loss surgery.

Patients benefit from Dr. Jay’s insistence upon follow-up visits, support groups, and other post-operative care opportunities. Follow-up is the key to success with bariatric surgery, and this is where Dr. Jay’s practice excels. His experienced staff ensures every patient receives compassionate and individualized care. A multidisciplinary approach of nutritionists, psychologists, and former patients helps ensure success.

He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Texas Medical Association and Dallas County Medical Society. He is also a member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons.

Dr. Jay has been selected one of the Best Doctors in Dallas by D Magazine every single year, from 2005 through 2016.

“Obesity is a chronic disease with well-established association to multiple medical conditions, including type II diabetes, heart disease (in addition to high blood pressure), strokes, osteoarthritis, obstructive sleep apnea, depression, even certain cancers and many more. Currently, over two-thirds of Americans are overweight and this number is rising rapidly.

My role is not only to discuss the benefits and risks of the procedure but also to explain different bariatric surgeries currently available and their benefits and complications as well. I also assist Dr. Jayaseelan to obtain the approval of LAP-BAND, and Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure for that patient by writing thorough medical consultation notes, which include detailed previous diet trials and attempts and reasons for medical necessity for that patient to submit to his/her health insurance. I also am responsible to ‘clear’ the patient for the surgery once he/she has been approved. My wish is to communicate with patients for better understanding of the procedure and to make specific recommendations and provide educational information to each patient to improve the patient’s outcome of the surgery.” -Kashmir Kaur
