How Do I Know If I Am Eligible to Receive Weight Loss Surgery?

There are several ways to determine if you are eligible for weight loss surgery. Some are specific to your health, others to the procedure Dr. Jay performs, and still others based on your readiness for surgery. We explain some of these factors below.

Health

As part of your initial consultation with Dr. Jay, he will review your medical history as well as your current physical condition. At Dallas Bariatric Center, we place a premium on the care of our weight loss surgery patients. Ensuring that they are healthy enough for surgery is our way of securing their well-being and giving them confidence in the decision to have the procedure.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Your BMI is a calculation of your body’s fat based on your height and weight. If your BMI is significantly above ideal, you may be a candidate for weight loss surgery. Dallas Bariatric Center offers a free online tool for you to use to calculate your personal BMI.

Weight Loss Surgery Procedure

Different surgeries are appropriate depending on your BMI. For example, LAP-BAND® may be a fit for those with a BMI of 35 or greater, while sleeve gastrectomy may be a better option for patients with a 38 or higher BMI.

Insurance

Typically, insurance companies will consider covering weight loss surgery if you have a BMI of 35 or higher with additional conditions like hypertension, sleep apnea, and heart disease (or a BMI of 40+ without any co-morbidity.) Our staff can discuss your insurance questions to help you get the answers you need.

Commitment

Often overlooked in a patient’s eligibility is his or her commitment to change. Weight loss surgery is a personal decision, and patients should be determined to meet the requirements for sustaining their health long-term. This means new eating and exercise habits, and it also means becoming comfortable with changes in the way you look. Our staff offers its support, guidance, and resources to help patients transition to a new body and a new life.
